How ghostwriter pricing actually works
Four things move the number, and only one of them is length.
The per-word baseline
Professional non-fiction ghostwriters charge $0.75 to $2.00 per word in 2026. A 60,000-word book at $1.05 a word is about $63,000. Writers with bestseller credits start around $2.50 a word. Below $0.35 a word you are almost certainly buying offshore content-mill output or AI drafts with a light human pass.
Why business books cost more than memoirs
A memoir draws on one person’s memory. A business book needs market research, third-party interviews, fact-checking, and often legal review. That’s 30–45% more work for the same word count — which is why the same writer will quote $45,000 for a memoir and $70,000 for a founder’s book.
What you’re actually paying for
Roughly 20% goes to interviews and research, 15% to structural work and the chapter outline, 45% to drafting, and 20% to revision passes. The drafting is the smallest surprise; the structuring is where the value hides, and it’s the part cheap quotes skip.

Common questions
Do ghostwriters charge per word or a flat fee?
Most quote a flat project fee, paid across three to five milestones. Per-word rates are how they arrive at that number internally. Hourly billing is rare for book-length work and is usually a warning sign — it shifts all the schedule risk onto you.
What’s a normal payment schedule?
Typically 25–33% on signing, then equal instalments at outline approval, first-half draft, full draft, and final delivery. Never pay 100% up front. A writer asking for the full fee before work starts is the clearest red flag in the industry.
Are there costs beyond the ghostwriter?
Yes, and they’re routinely forgotten. Budget an extra $3,000–$9,000 for copy-editing and proofreading, cover design, interior layout, and ISBN/printing setup if you’re self-publishing. A ghostwriter delivers a manuscript, not a finished book.
Can I negotiate?
Somewhat. The usual levers are scope (fewer words), timeline (giving the writer more months lowers the rush premium), and how much prep you do yourself — arriving with organised notes and recordings can shave 10–15%. Negotiating the fee itself usually just buys you a less experienced writer.
