The clauses that actually matter
Copyright assignment
The single most important clause. It must say in plain words that all copyright and moral rights in the manuscript transfer to you, and that you are the sole author. “Work made for hire” language is standard and fine. If a writer resists this, stop.
Milestone payments
Typically 25–33% on signing, then instalments at outline approval, half-draft, full draft and delivery. Never pay 100% up front. This one term separates professionals from everyone else.
Revision rounds
A defined number — two full rounds is normal — with what counts as a “round” spelled out. Open-ended revision language protects nobody and turns into an argument.
Confidentiality / NDA
Mutual confidentiality, covering the fact of the engagement itself, not just the manuscript. Standard, and worth checking is present.
Kill fee and exit
What happens if you stop at chapter three. A fair contract states what’s owed for work completed and confirms you keep the rights to what’s already been written and paid for.
