Hiring a Ghostwriter

The reliable sources are professional associations (the Association of Ghostwriters, ASJA), referrals from authors in your field, literary agents, and matching services. General freelance marketplaces work for short content but rarely for book-length projects, where the entire vetting burden falls on you.

Ask to read a full sample chapter they wrote for a client, not a portfolio excerpt. Ask who owns the copyright, what happens if you dislike the first draft, how many revision rounds are included, who you will actually be working with, and for one past client you can speak to. A professional answers all six without hesitation.

Requesting the full fee up front. Refusing to name a past client. No written contract. Guaranteed publication or bestseller claims. A finished book promised in under eight weeks. Vague copyright language. And quotes far below market — under $10,000 for a full-length book almost always means an offshore content mill or AI output.

If you have fewer than about 30,000 words written, you want a ghostwriter. If you have a complete or near-complete manuscript, you want a developmental editor — $3,000–$12,000 instead of $40,000. Buying the wrong one is the most expensive mistake in this process.
