Questions built to be recorded, not written. Open this on a phone, hit record, and work through a section at a time.
How to use it
Record, don’t take notes. Six to ten sessions of about an hour each covers a whole life. Ask open questions about scenes rather than facts — “what did the kitchen smell like” gets you more than “where did you grow up”. Let the digressions run; they’re usually the book. An hour of recorded conversation is worth more than a year of intending to write something down.
Childhood
- Where did you live, and what did the house smell like?
- Who was in the room at dinner?
- What did you get in trouble for?
- What did your parents worry about?
- What was your happiest ordinary day?
- What frightened you?
- What did you want to be?
- Who outside the family mattered most?
Growing up
- What was your first job and what did it pay?
- Who was your first real friend?
- What music was playing?
- When did you first feel like an adult?
- What did you get wrong about the world?
- Who believed in you?
- What did you do that your parents never found out about?
Work
- What was the first thing you were genuinely good at?
- What was the worst job you ever had?
- Who taught you your trade?
- What was the hardest year?
- What decision would you make differently?
- What are you proudest of that nobody noticed?
- When did you know it was time to stop?
Love and family
- How did you meet?
- What do you remember about the wedding that wasn’t planned?
- What surprised you about becoming a parent?
- What did you argue about?
- What did you get right?
- What do you wish you had said?
Turning points
- What is the closest you came to disaster?
- Who did you lose, and when?
- What changed you the most?
- When did you start over?
- What did you believe then that you don’t now?
What you’d pass on
- What do you want the grandchildren to know?
- What advice did you ignore and shouldn’t have?
- What are you still curious about?
- What would you want said at your funeral?
- What was the point of it all, do you think?
Recorded it, and now it’s sitting on a phone?
That’s the most common place these projects stall. A ghostwriter can work straight from raw audio — transcription and structure is the part people underestimate.
